AI Usage & Disclosure Policy

Last updated: January 15, 2025

We believe in being honest about how AI tools are used in our work. This page explains exactly where, when, and how AI is part of our editorial process — and where it is not.

Our Position on AI in Editorial Work

Virtopia covers AI as a topic. We also use AI tools as part of our internal processes. We think both can be true without conflict — as long as we are transparent about what AI does and what humans do.

Our position: AI is a useful tool for parts of editorial work. It is not a replacement for human judgment, expertise, or accountability. The credibility of our content depends on real humans who understand the subjects they write about, who test the tools they recommend, and who are accountable for what they publish under their names.

What AI Assists With

We use AI tools to help with the following tasks in our editorial process:

Grammar and Style Checking

AI grammar tools help catch typos, awkward phrasing, and inconsistencies before publication. Final editing decisions are always made by a human editor.

Research Summarization

When researching a topic, writers may use AI to summarize lengthy documentation or reports. All cited claims are then verified against original sources by the writer.

Headline Brainstorming

Writers may use AI to generate headline options as a brainstorming aid. Final headlines are selected and refined by human editors based on accuracy and editorial judgment.

SEO Meta Descriptions

AI may draft initial meta descriptions for articles. These are reviewed and often rewritten by editors before publication.

Outline Assistance

Writers may use AI to help organize article outlines for complex topics. The actual content is always written by the human author based on their own research and knowledge.

Code and Tool Testing

For technical articles, AI may be used to verify code snippets or help explore a tool's capabilities. All findings are independently confirmed by the writer.

What AI Does Not Do at Virtopia

Write Complete Articles

We do not publish AI-generated articles as editorial content. All articles are written by human authors.

Generate Factual Claims

AI is not used to generate statistics, data points, or factual claims. All facts come from verified sources found through human research.

Make Editorial Decisions

Topic selection, content strategy, publishing decisions, and editorial positions are made by our human editorial team.

Review or Recommend Products

Product reviews and recommendations reflect human testing and judgment. AI is not used to generate review conclusions or ratings.

Article-Level AI Disclosure

For articles where AI assistance played a significant role — for example, an article that involved substantial use of AI research summarization tools — we include an AI assistance note in the article's metadata, typically displayed below the author byline.

We are refining what "significant" means as AI tools continue to evolve. Our working definition: if AI helped generate, structure, or substantively shape any portion of the article's prose or argument, we disclose it. Grammar checking and metadata assistance alone do not trigger a disclosure.

AI Tools We Use

We use a range of AI-assisted tools in our workflow including AI writing assistants for grammar checking, research summarization tools, and AI-powered SEO analysis tools. We do not disclose specific vendors for security reasons, but we are happy to discuss our general toolchain with readers who ask.

Coverage of AI Topics

Because Virtopia covers AI as a subject area, we apply extra care to ensure our AI coverage is accurate, balanced, and not influenced by our own use of AI tools.

Writers covering AI products or AI-related topics must disclose in their article notes whether they use the tools they are covering in their own work. This helps editorial leadership identify potential bias or conflicts of interest.

We do not accept payment, free access, or other incentives from AI tool vendors in exchange for coverage or positive reviews.

Evolving This Policy

AI tools and norms are changing rapidly. This policy will evolve as the technology and best practices develop. We will update this page when our practices change, and we will note significant changes on our homepage.

We welcome feedback on this policy. If you believe our AI disclosure practices are insufficient or unclear, please email [email protected].
